Californians are encouraged to take steps to prevent Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) theft. The California Department of Social Services created videos with security tips for EBT cardholders (English, Spanish). If you think your benefits may have been stolen, immediately call the customer service telephone number on the back of your EBT card, (877) 328-9677.
Also, the CDSS warns EBT card users to avoid scams appearing on social media sites and online marketplaces. Be mindful of social media posts and advertisements posted by third-party sellers claiming to offer a “free government smartphone” or other items. Individuals have been asked to provide personal identifying information, including photos of their EBT card and their full Social Security Number. After being told they do not qualify for the item, victims later experience unauthorized PIN changes and transactions on their EBT accounts.
Anyone who encounters similar social media advertisements should not provide personal information, EBT card number, or PINs to anyone. Impacted cardholders who shared their information are encouraged to contact their local EHSD office to request replacement of stolen benefits due to electronic theft.
