More CalFresh participants will need to work or participate in a community engagement activity to keep getting their food benefits starting June 1, 2026.
For CalFresh customers between the ages of 18 and 64, who do not have a disability, work requirements will resume. This is known as the Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) rule.
To meet this new requirement, Contra Costa County CalFresh customers may need to:
·     Work or volunteer an average of 20 hours per week (80 hours per month)
·     Attend school or participate in a job training program
These changes do not affect all CalFresh recipients.
