What is Earn It! Keep It! Save It! ? In 2004, the Employment & Human Services Department, in collaboration with other county departments (United Way, Internal Revenue Service and several and community organizations) is spearheading the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Campaign. This effort helps the hard-working people of Contra Costa to access the Earned Income Tax Credit and to receive free tax preparation. |

Do I have to receive CalWORKs or other assistance to take advantage of the free tax preparation? No. You just need to be low income.
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Care Tax Credit (CCTC) are two income programs available to low and moderate income working families who meet the eligibility criteria. You can receive up to $4,204 in an EITC refund and an additional $1,000 per qualifying child through the Child Care Tax Credit. How can I get these tax credits? All you have to do is apply when filing your 2003 tax return. Where can I apply? Thirteen (13) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites are located throughout Contra Costa County. From February 7, 2004 through April 10, 2004, VITA sites are open in the evenings and on Saturdays. VITA volunteers will prepare your tax return free of charge in addition to completing the forms for the EITC and CCTC. Click here for the VITA locations and call for an appointment. See the website of Earn It! Keep It! Save It! for more information. Still have questions or having trouble getting a VITA appointment? Call our toll free number at (866) 390-3473.
